Brewed with botanicals

To create unique, naturally delicious beers

The Netherlands literally means the "Low Lands" as much of the land is below sea level. Pioneering seafarers, the Lowlanders traded all over the world. Inspired by their travels we explore the world of herbs, spices and fruits and brew with these botanicals to create unique, naturally delicious beers.

"While working in a gin distillery in the UK I fell in love with the use of botanicals in distilling and the fascinating world of cocktails. Having basically grown up in beer in the Netherlands it was only natural that I started wondering what would happen if you would brew rather than distil with these botanicals.

To my surprise I discovered that the Lowlands actually have a very intriguing history where it comes to brewing with botanicals. As Dutch explorers travelled the globe they returned home with cargos brimming with precious herbs and exotic spices, which soon made their way into Dutch beer. And so the idea for Lowlander Beer was born.

I invite you to follow our journey, proost!"

Lowlander Winter IPA

Brewed with discarded Christmas trees - tastes good and does good!

At Lowlander, we use botanicals to bring flavour to our beers. Exploration and discovery are in our DNA so when January 2018, out running in Amsterdam, I saw mountains of single-use Christmas trees awaiting the chipper on the kerbs all around me, I had a lightbulb moment. Here were piles of botanicals going to waste. Couldn’t we turn these trees into a winter beer? I decided that next Christmas we would ask people to donate their Christmas trees and use them to brew our 2019 Winter IPA. A mammoth but rewarding task and once picked and preserved, the needles of those Christmas trees went into the Lowlander brew kettles along with juniper berries, to come out in the form of a resinous, hoppy Winter IPA with 5% abv and a refreshing citrus kick.

"Three of the best low-alcohol beers (that actually taste good). A brisk citrus freshness meets softer, mildly creamy notes. Produced using leftover oranges and lemons from bars and restaurants, so gets eco marks too as well, as being totally alcohol-free."

"If you're completely teetotal, but miss that feeling of drinking a refreshing, crisp beer, Lowlander's new 0.00% Wit has got you covered. Made from reclaimed orange and lemon peels that have been left over from making fruit juices, this beer has a zesty and slightly sour kick that lifts the overall flavour and leaves you wanting more (without any of the usual beery consequences). Serve it ice cold with a wedge of lime, then sit back, relax and enjoy."

"A hybrid infusion of fruit, botanicals, natural teas and beer, these are low-alcohol, low calorie, but still lots of fun. Bring on the sunshine!"
