Mostly carved out of cedar or redwood, these wooden products contain naturally protective resins which have incredibly durable properties and so will last for many years. The mushrooms and toadstools can be left to mature naturally or simply oiled with a clear preservative or teak oil to bring out the wonderful grain patterns of the wood.
It is important to note that individual wooden mushrooms are carved out of a single piece of green wood. This means that on drying and wetting they will be prone to forces of contraction and expansion. This may manifest itself on the mushrooms as stress fractures and so add to their natural character. In fact, you will notice that with redwood and cedar the splits tend to open and close again with the weather. The mushrooms should not be kept indoors as the contractive forces may be too great.
