A delicate “Sew for Bees” print kimono in a beautiful wildflower floral print with a delicate frill hemline
As a nature-inspired label, we have created a new Sew for Bees range of kimonos. Because of the critical plight of the bee and their importance as pollinators, we commissioned Devon-based nature artist, Alex Boon, to illustrate a selection of the wild flowers that we all need to nurture and plant for bees. We have focussed on blue and purple flowers as these are the ones that bees are most drawn to. To our knowledge this is the first time that a clothing label has communicated this vital story through its prints and as we aim to create wearable art, this is a natural addition to our range.
As Alex says: “Bees see colour best in the blue spectrum, so growing blue and purple flowers is a great way to attract them to your garden. Grow a range of different flower types to attract bigger bees (with longer tongues) and smaller bees (such as honeybees, with shorter tongues). Your efforts will not only help the bees, but also a range of other insects such as moths, butterflies and grasshoppers.”
The lightweight frilled “Sew for Bees” kimono jacket comes in a beautiful floral print based on individual drawings by Alex Boon of both plants and different bees on a midnight blue background. We have called it “Sew for Bees” as a play on sowing seeds and sewing garments.
The flowers included in the print are: Bluebells, Grape hyacinth, Green alkanes, Purple toadflax, Bugle, Cornflower, Tufted vetch and Self-heal.
The lightweight frilled kimono can be worn both casually or smart as a little jacket. It is made from a draping, silky viscose fabric . It has a plain placket down the front and wonderful fluted sleeves which give it a very feminine touch. Being slightly longer over the hips, this short kimono jacket creates a very flattering silhouette. Making it exceptionally comfortable to wear whilst ensuring you look fabulously stylish.
Our styling tip would be to pair this lightweight short kimono with a camisole top or polo neck jumper for warmth, and team it up with straight-legged trousers or jeans. For something a little smarter, wear it over a simple block-coloured dress and add a set of heels. Alternatively a maxi skirt could give you a very bohemian and romantic style.
From My Mother’s Garden uses environmentally responsible fabrics and techniques wherever possible. All the new styles are created using sublimation printing which minimises fabric wastage. The first collection includes styles made of Viscose which is a sustainable fabric.
