Make a splash with our adorable whale downloadable knitting pattern – the perfect project for trying out colour-work while creating a cuddly sea friend.
Designed for knitters who are confident with the basics, these whales are worked flat on straight needles using chunky yarn. With simple increases and decreases for shaping, they’re fun, straightforward, and satisfying to knit, and a lovely way to learn basic colour-working.
What you’ll need: 4.5mm straight knitting needles, Chunky yarn in two colours, Sewing needle, Toy stuffing, a pair of 6mm toy safety eyes per whale (or you can embroider the eyes)
When finished, each whale measures around 19cm long – a lovely size for play or display.
Yarns we used (but feel free to swap in your favourites!): Paintbox Simply Chunky in Washed Teal (332) for the blue whale, Chunky Monkey in Punch (2013) for the pink whale, Hayfield Bonus Chunky in White (961) for the tummy and details. As a guide, one ball of Paintbox Simply Chunky plus one ball of Hayfield Bonus Chunky is enough to knit three whales.
