About the teamaker for our teas from Myanmar
This certified organic tea is produced in Kyaut Saung village in Mogok Valley, in northern Myanmar. Mogok Valley has historically been famous for its gemstone mining, but without robust safety and environmental regulations in a country still embroiled in conflict, this industry has led to a volatile landscape for local residents. Mogok Tea aims to provide an alternative - founder Phyu Thwe created Mogok Tea to revitalise the land and provide safe, stable employment, particularly for local women. For the impact of her work in this area, Phyu received the Tea for Life award at the UK Tea Academy’s 2022 Leafies.
Our Mogok teas are grown and processed organically at the Five Tree Estate, named for the five ancient Banyan trees at the entrance to the estate, which have provided shelter and spiritual protection to locals and travellers for many years. These trees are a significant part of local life, with locals maintaining their temples with regular offerings such as flowers and fresh fruit and water in honour of the local guardian spirit the ‘Yoke Ka Zoe’. The estate comprises 100 acres of old, wild-growing tea plants and 80 acres of newly planted tea.
Combining traditional family methods with rigorous training and documented experiments, Mogok Tea aims to raise the standard of Myanmar tea with a focus on sustainability, fair-trade practices, and natural methods. In the words of founder Phyu:
"When you sip Mogok Tea, you are not just experiencing a beverage; you are immersing yourself in a legacy that spans centuries. It is a taste of nature's blessings, a glimpse into the mystical world of the 'Yoke Ka Zoe,' and an opportunity to be a part of a movement towards a fairer, greener world."
