Variations
Sashiko (“little stabs”) is the Japanese art of repairing fabrics by sewing patterns onto them. Its exact origins are unknown, but by the 19th century, the technique had been adopted throughout Japan as a means to strengthen and decorate clothes. Even the firefighters’ uniforms consisted of a thick cotton jacket with intricate sashiko designs that would help the garment retain more water. Sashiko can now be seen on catwalks and designer clothes across the world.
