Iconic design made in ply

Hi, I'm Helen and I’m a furniture designer living in East London and proud owner of Plyconic. I first founded Plyconic in 2016 as I love mid-century iconic designs, but didn't have the budget to furnish my home with them. So, I recreated some of my favourite pieces in ply as a holding piece until I can buy the genuine article.

In 2019 I wanted to bring my love of architecture into the home. For me the beauty of architecture is not only it’s shape but the voids and shadows the amazing architecture brings. I created PlyForms (plywood relief pictures) to see the voids and shadows of the architecture I love come to life. The pictures differing depths allow you to feel the architecture as well as see it. Made in just plywood the colours of the buildings are not picked up but the shapes, shadows and depth of the pictures are. The plywood gives the image a calming subtle tone as it is made up of just surface height/depth and shadows rather than lines and colour. The PlyForms change subtlety throughout the day as the light moves around the room as the shadows cast from the 3D forms also move and changes intensity.
