With sustainability being as important to me as good design I have made my furniture environmentally friendly and I would like to think that that each piece is a lifetime investment.
The wooden carcasses are made by a local carpenter using FSC certified solid pine, not ply or MDF. The lids are made as a frame using mortis and tenon joints for strength and then webbed (as you would a substantial chair) for comfort and to be as lightweight as possible. I use Linwood’s Lana upholstery fabric for the top cover, which is recycled a Italian wool. A natural material called rubberised hair instead of toxic polyurethane foam is used for the cushioned lid. Rubberised hair is made of coconut coir, curled animal hair and natural latex. It is free of solvents, CFC’s and cancer causing substances. Instead of polyester I use white cotton felt and wool barrier cloth and non FR calico are also used as natural alternatives under the top layer of fabric.
The velvet upholstery can be brushed over with a clothes bursh or lint lifter. Upholstery cleaners cn also be used.
