- Hallmarked 14k gold-filled hoops (recycled gold)
- Vintage glass pearls
Gold-filled means that a solid layer of gold has been permanently bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal (usually brass). This means that gold-filled has almost 100x more gold than gold plated jewellery. The gold layer has to be at least 1/20th the weight of the total item, making it the best affordable alternative to solid gold.
Gold-filled jewellery is shower safe and, if taken care of, will last many years. Over time gold-filled pieces may oxidise to a deeper/darker gold tone, but will not wear off. Tarnish is usually superficial and can be cleaned or polished off.
Care guide: Avoid wearing your jewellery in swimming pools or any other body of water that may contain harsh chemicals. If this happens always dry it off thoroughly afterwards (don't let it air dry). Apply lotion, perfume, makeup and hairspray before putting your jewellery on.
To clean: wash your piece under warm water and use a very soft toothbrush to remove any residue. Pad dry with a soft and clean towel. Glass pearls require extra care, as the outer layer is very delicate. Avoid contact with chemicals and objects that may abrade their surface.
To polish: gently wipe with a soft, non-abrasive jewellery cloth (remember not to rub harshly).
