Beautiful products for pets and the people who love them.
The Artisan Tree is a small but lively business tucked away in rural West Berkshire. Though separated geographically by over 4,000 miles we work hand in hand with our partners in rural northern Kenya. Here, a team of skilled women artisans are headed up by Beatrice, Karin & Kirsty – three women ‘who can and who do’!
Together we design, make and bring to market a range of luxury leather & beaded dog collars, leads, lanyards and more for dogs and their owners.
The heart of the business is our artisans - women living in remote pastoralist communities such as the Samburu, Maasai, Rendille, Turkana and Borana. With skills passed from mother to daughter for over 200 years they have skills that can’t be rivalled anywhere.
Key to our business is allowing everyone to work either at or close to home in a small sociable group. Women can work flexibly, and alongside other commitments they have, be it children, goats or farming. We don’t use factories and wages are commensurate with the highly skilled work the artisans do.
The work provides a reliable income stream which is welcomed as rainfall is unpredictable these days and farming can be fragile. It enables parents to improve their family’s lives. Furthermore, it means women don’t have to resort to charcoal production which can lead to deforestation and adversely affect the wildlife that naturally occurs in rural areas.
By purchasing one of our pieces you are not only buying a beautiful dog collar, lead or lanyard. You have helped our growing business and piece by piece, helped us to secure a more sustainable future for many women in rural Northern Kenya.
