Create your own 15cm mosaic using traditional techniques with vibrant glass tiles, leaving with a grouted masterpiece.
This is a full-on, full-day workshop learning the fundamentals of creating a mosaic. Amy Exton is classically trained at the London School of Mosaic. She has studied Roman, Byzantine, and neo-classical methods, but her own art is burnished with her particular contemporary signature style.
WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Who doesn’t love a mosaic? Now you can get to grips with the basics of becoming a mosaicist. The whole day will be spent working on your own 15cm mosaic, using the direct method of applying the pieces to wood. You will be working with unglazed and vitreous glass, with a wide range of colours to choose from.
Bring along your own design or choose from a selection of designs provided. You will be using traditional tools to nip and shape your pieces as you develop your pattern and learn the principles of andamento — basically, how to control the directional flow of the mosaic. Now, this is a complex subject, but luckily you have a tile rather than a whole floor to deal with.
TELL ME MORE
You will be working in a small group — no more than six — in Amy’s personal studio in Margate, which should certainly fire and inspire. Tea and snacks will be provided while you work, and you will leave with a grouted tile ready for display.
Will you use your tile for the teapot? A house number? Part of the bathroom?
Once you start nipping, it’s hard to stop.
