WHAT'S THIS POTTERY CLASS ALL ABOUT?
Learn how to transform a lump of raw clay into a functional and beautiful piece of art. For the Japanese, sake is as much about the ritual as it is about the spirit; A sake cup can apparently change your perception of the drink; Ceramic cups help soften the acidity in sake and are considered the best, so you can think about that as you start to design and create your own. Don’t worry if you’re a beginner—you’ll be guided through every step of the process as you conquer the fundamental skills needed to throw and shape pottery on a wheel.
There are two separate processes in this class:
- Session 1 - Wheel Throwing (2 hours)
- Session 2 - Glazing (1 hour to be completed month after the initial class)
You’ll be making two sake cups and a sake bottle, but you’ll have to wait a few weeks before the set can be collected. It will be fired in your absence, and you’ll be notified when they’re ready for pick-up. The studio offers a very zen-like environment for creating and experimenting. Teaching takes place in small groups, so you’ll receive lots of individual attention from Raymond, who is simply the best—kind, patient, and fun, just what a novice needs.
TELL ME MORE
Why are the cups so small? Drinking sake is a social activity, so you must always fill up a friend's cup before your own. This is a token of camaraderie and respect. It also ensures that you are drinking the spirit at the correct temperature—and all this time, you thought you were just going to a pottery class...
