Go where cinema first began! Velvet chairs, gold coat hooks and a working, Compton cinema organ. This is gift for real film lovers.
Go where the magic of the past blends seamlessly with todays best blockbusters. Right in the heart of London, over 120 years ago, the Lumière Brothers unveiled their Cinematographe machine, kickstarting the film industry. This was the first cinema to open its doors to the paying public, charging 54 people a shilling each to watch the 40 second clip.
Regent Street cinema, the iconic cinema where this event occurred, was restored to its stunning Art Deco glory in 2015.
Today, the cinema is run by a team of independent film lovers, who make sure that every film counts.
From the best blockbusters to the most exciting independent and foreign-language films, the main criterion is that whatever is shown on the screen must transport you to another place. Their programme covers every genre. So whether it’s Gladiator II, A Man for all Seasons or It’s a Wonderful Life, you can settle in and fall in love with cinema all over again.
TELL ME MORE
Regent Street Cinema screens films in digital 4K with 7.1 surround sound in the Art Deco auditorium complete with velvet chairs, gold coat hooks, and an elliptical-coved ceiling—in other words, a proper old-fashioned cinema.
The team has also spent the past year lovingly restoring Regent Street Cinema's original 35mm projector, so keep an eye out for very special film-on-film presentations. This is one of the only cinemas in the country to have an original working Compton cinema organ; every first Monday of the month, there's a recital before the matinée screening, several times a year silent films are run, accompanied by the organ. It is a joy to listen to.
