Native to Europe, Asia and North America, chives are a member of the onion family - a popular culinary herb with a mild oniony flavour. The latin name schoenoprasum is from Greek meaning ‘rush leek’, and chives were known by this name during the Middle Ages, when dried bunches were hung from doorways to ward off evil.
