About Me

I love to make pottery for every day use. The pleasure of using a hand made piece is like no other and lasts forever.

I had difficulty finding my true path in life. My childhood ambition was to be a scientist and I went to Cambridge to study natural sciences. I then decided to transfer to Medical Sciences and was on track to be a doctor when I at last realised that all the creative hobbies I loved had taken strong hold on my imagination. What to do? I was fortunate in my art teacher at school who was most interested in pottery herself and had fought for a well resourced pottery room with wheels and a kiln and I had spent a lot of time in there during my last 2 years at school. I eventually found that I could bring both science and art together in pottery and ended up deciding not to pursue medical studies, but to go to art school in London.

I did foundation studies at Sir John Cass Art College in Whitechapel and then got a place at the prestigious Harrow School of Art and Design.

I have worked in Britain and France as a ceramic artist ever since. I am so grateful I found my true vocation.

Tythegston Pottery was set up as a training workshop for a new generation of potters to gain essential workshop experience. There is a growing range of handthrown tableware in a robust stoneware, which can happily go in the dishwasher and the microwave.

But Joanna Howells is an internationally recognised ceramic artist. She exhibits throughout Britain, Europe and the far East. Her work has been much written about. The most recent book to feature her work is 'Contemporary Ceramics' by Emmanuel Cooper a leading cultural critic. It is a worldwide survey of the most distinctive and innovative ceramics today. Her work has also been featured in The Times, Homes and Gardens and many other publications.
