Creating opportunities for mothers in Bangladesh to provide for their children with dignity and contributing to the circular economy.
WHAT DOES KHUSHI KANTHA MEAN?
Kantha’ (which translates as “stitched cloth”) refers to the Bengali tradition of repurposing old cotton saris to create ultra-soft, multi-layered blankets, especially for babies.
The traditional embroidery stitch that is applied over the top is known as ‘kantha’ stitch.
‘Kantha’ can also simply mean ‘blanket’.
‘Khushi’ is the Bengali term for ‘happy’ – ‘Khushi Kantha’ therefore means ‘Happy Blanket’.
EAST MEETS WEST - REGENERATING THE 'KANTHA' TRADITION
Khushi Kantha’s designs represent a cultural fusion, combining traditional Bengali ‘kantha’ stitching and animal motifs with geometric patterns and a contemporary colour palette.
And we’re reworking the ‘kantha’ technique to meet global hygiene and safety standards, while retaining the principles of reclaim-repurpose-reuse and celebrating Bangladesh’s rich textiles heritage.
Our blankets are created from four layers of 100% cotton fabric. The outside layers are made from traditional handloom fabric, hand-dyed using Oeko-Tex passport certified dyes. We partner with sustainably-minded members of the Bangladeshi garments industry to breathe new life into what's known as 'deadstock' cotton fabric by upcycling it as the inside layers of our blankets.
OUR PRODUCT RANGE
Our 'Happy Blankets' are our signature product, but we've recently expanded our product range to include tote bags, pouch bags, cushion covers, dolly bedding and wall hangings....and we love to be challenged with custom orders!
AN AWARD-WINNING SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
We were so proud to win the 'Mission Possible' Award for Best Social Enterprise at the 2022 Small Business Awards - it feels brilliant to have our efforts to build better futures for the next generation recognised.
As a social enterprise, our values drive every decision we make....
Resilience - Our blankets are made to last. Instilled with the strength of the mothers who create them, we design them to withstand the daily wear-and-tear of life with little ones, and be treasured from child to child.
Regeneration - We breathe new life into everything we do, from reviving and repurposing the age-old ‘kantha’ tradition, to reclaiming and reusing fabric, and revitalising local economies.
Re-envisaging community - When you become a mother, you become part of a global community of women who want to do all that they can to give their children the best start in life. We continually reflect on how we can use the collaborative power of community to build better futures for everyone.
Reframing the narrative - We want the words ‘Made in Bangladesh’ to be a statement of pride and happiness. Our exquisitely hand-crafted products do not compromise on quality – we refuse to rely on ‘pity purchases’.
