A detailed and well-researched map showing the Viking colonisation and conquest of Britain and Ireland between 789 and 1066 AD. Fascinating and beautiful!
The earliest Viking incursions were raids targeting monasteries, but by the mid-9th century much of Scotland and Ireland was under Norse/Danish control, and Anglo-Saxon Wessex and Mercia were battling to survive.
This map took four months to hand-draw with dip-pens & ink. It shows the Norse, Danish, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic kingdoms and settlements, plus sites of over 50 battles and raids with dates. A timeline chronicles major events, the inset maps Jorvik (York), the Viking capital of the Danelaw, and it's gorgeously decorated with elements from Viking mythology.
Perfect for anyone interested in this fascinating era of medieval history.
