My story

I create a variety of educational and creative art kits with a focus on analogue photography.

I'm Emily Rose Parris, an artist and arts educator based on the North Kent coast.

I am passionate about photography and educating others in a hands-on and inclusive way. In 2015, I set up a small black and white darkroom called The Darkroom at Beach Creative. I tutor darkroom and photography techniques onsite and within local schools and community organisations.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, I decided to adapt my teaching by creating photography kits. My cyanotype kits have been designed to suit beginners up. The kits vary in difficulty to cover a range of ages and abilities, each designed to create a fun, expressive environment for learning. My cyanotype kits have proved to be really popular, selling over 1000 units and counting... I am overjoyed to be offering these kits here at Not on the Highstreet!

What is cyanotype print?

A cyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1841 and made famous by Kent based scientist Anna Atkins in her book titled ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’ in 1843.

A cyanotype print is made by preparing paper with ultra-violet sensitive chemicals. Objects are arranged directly onto the UV sensitive paper and exposed to the UV rays from the sun. Once exposed, the objects are removed and the print is washed in cold tap water to fix the image to the page. The outcome is a beautiful blue and white silhouette print.
